The Best Airbnbs in Italy, From 13th Century Villas to Olive Farm Treehouses
By Meredith Carey and Madison Flager

Figuring out where to travel in Italy is hard enough: From Venice and Milan in the north, Rome, Florence, and Tuscany in the center, and the Amalfi Coast and Sicily in the south, there are so many destinations to choose from. You'll have to figure that out on your own—but we've done the legwork to find amazing vacation rentals in all of the cities and regions above, plus lesser-known towns in Le Marche and Puglia, once you've settled on a location. Or, plan your adventures around these impressive home bases, like a treehouse in Tuscany, a refurbished 15th century palazzo in Sicily, and a canal-side Venetian apartment. As a bonus, most of the Airbnb selections are run by Superhosts, who each have a rating of 4.8 or above, a record of zero cancellations, and at least a 90 percent response rate, meaning they'll get back to you before you can say buongiorno. Two-bedroom right on the Grand Canal
If you want to get up close and personal with Venice's hustle and bustle, pony up for this apartment directly on the Grand Canal. You'll want to schedule some time to sit out on the patio and watch boats fly by. The inside lives up to the outside's standards too, with a leafy green Venetian-plastered living room, two bedrooms, and a fully stocked kitchen. This is an Airbnb Plus after all, meaning it's passed a 100-point inspection including having closet and drawer space for guests, a well-lit entry, easy check-in, comfortable mattresses, a coffee maker, and toiletries like shampoo. Bonus: You won't have to worry about finding your way to the apartment on Venice's busy streets with your luggage, as the host Mariacaterina will organize a private water taxi to take you directly from the airport to your Airbnb's front door.

Relatively quiet one-bedroom near the action
Green really seems to be Venice's color, doesn't it? This one-bedroom apartment has a Murphy bed in the living room (pictured), well-equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, and all of the amenities of an Airbnb Plus, like strong Wi-Fi, a coffee maker, and more. There's also a high chair and crib available upon request (though no bathtub). While centrally located—just a 10-minute walk from St. Marks Plaza—the home is on a piazza's side street, meaning noise levels in the apartment are low even though the city's most popular attractions are just steps outside.

Minimalist one-bedroom in San Polo
You'll want to stick to white wine in this nearly all white two-bedroom designed by the hosts, who are local architects. While stark, the apartment—set on a canal in Venice's San Polo neighborhood—is filled with bright pops of color, from the open kitchen shelves and bookcases to accent pillows in the bedrooms. And while white Airbnbs can dirty up fast, past guests rave about how clean the apartment was.

Maximalist three-bedroom with private rooftop
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is this over-the-top three-bedroom apartment, notably the former home of Hubert de Givenchy (yes, that Givenchy). Here, it's all about matching the wallpaper to the fabrics, which you'll find in the floral living room, striped family room, lemon-yellow bedroom, and beyond. But it isn't full-on all the time: the enormous chef's kitchen is nearly all-white, with two extra-large tables and two ovens for dinners in. Be sure to eat a few meals on the private rooftop terrace, which offers views of St. Mark's Basilica and its bell tower.

One-bedroom with private lake access
Located on the west side of the lake about an hour from Como, this two-story, one-bedroom home offers the best of every world: a modern kitchen and chic design, rustic features like wood-beam ceilings, outdoor living areas, private access to Lake Como, not to mention views over the lake from every room and two goats as neighbors. Note, it's a bit of a hike here (about 150 steps), and while there's a cable system to ferry up your luggage, you'll have to make your own way to the home.

13th-century lakefront villa
This is one of the most unusual Airbnb apartments we've seen thanks to the curved stone ceiling featured throughout—but don't think the 13th-century build comes without modern amenities. Expect an industrial kitchen, spacious living area, cozy bedroom, lakefront outdoor space with sun loungers and dining areas—and even baby gear, like a high chair and pack 'n play, available on request.

Three-bedroom in a renovated 15th-century monastery
What a view: This three-bedroom Airbnb offers an unparalleled look at Florence's San Frediano in Cestello church. In fact, the building itself was a former Carmelite monastery in the 15th century—this particular apartment is on the third floor, so pray for strength on the steps. (One of the bedrooms is also in the loft, so prep for more steps.) There's air conditioning, a washer/dryer, and a decent-sized kitchen inside. Outside, you're just a 10-minute walk from Palazzo Pitti and 15 minutes from the Uffizi Gallery.
Modern apartment with unparalleled Florence views
Italian Airbnb hosts seem to love teal—this is the first of three teal-painted apartments on this list—but the real accent walls in this home are the floor-to-ceiling glass panels in the kitchen and dining room that showcase views over Florence and its surrounding hills. The color-filled two-bedroom is a little outside the city center in a largely residential district, but you're still only 15 minutes from the Museo di San Marco, Galleria dell'Accademia, and more. Once you've finished exploring for the day, relax on the private terrace.

Airbnb Plus near Florence Santa Maria Novella station
At under $200 a night, this one-bedroom Airbnb Plus is a steal, especially considering the stellar rooftop views over Florence, including a look at the Duomo. Though it's on the top floor, this apartment has an elevator, so over-packers can breathe a sigh of relief—plus its location in the building means it has incredible, original wood-beam ceilings. Located on the north side of the Arno, this rental is just a few blocks from the central train station for easy access in and out of the city, and about a 10-minute walk from the Uffizi.
Art-filled two-bedroom apartment
This two-bedroom is filled with antique furniture and Renaissance-style art, and tons of natural light to show it all off. But the real stand-outs are the two bathrooms, decked out in marble from the floor to the ceiling. It's located on the south side of the Arno (which you can see from some of the apartment's windows), just a five-minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio and Florence's best attractions.

Spacious home outside the city center
If you've been to Florence a time or two (or three) and are looking for a new way to experience the city, head out of town. This entire home on an olive oil farm is just 20 minutes from the city center, giving you the best of both worlds—a quiet Tuscan countryside getaway with easy access to Florence's bustle and culture. The interior has all the bells and whistles you need, like a modern kitchen, stunning bathrooms, two bedrooms, and spacious living areas, plus you have access to a shared pool during your stay.

Renovated farmhouse near Siena
A 15-minute drive from Siena, this renovated farmhouse has been turned into three different apartments—but we're partial to the two-bedroom located on the side of the main house. With its own shaded porch and more than 1,000 square feet, this private rental is the largest of the three. Inside, it offers a large kitchen, living area, and washing machine, in addition to two king-sized beds and a sofa bed. Outside, you'll have access to a shared grill and enormous pool, all surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. Speaking of countryside, neighborhood sheep stop by every once in a while to say hi, too.

Seven-bedroom villa on 45 acres
Do not let the price tag scare you away: This Airbnb fits more than 16 in its seven bedrooms—ideal for family reunions in the Italian countryside, about an hour's drive south of Florence in Montevarchi. The 17th century farmhouse also has a saltwater swimming pool, two fireplaces, a stone amphitheater, and 45 acres of garden and olive groves to explore. The best perk here, according to Traveler contributor Jayna Maleri, is actually the cook, Maria, who has been working with the villa for years. She can whip up pizzas in one of the villa's two pizza ovens, teach pasta-making classes, and more. (Hiring a cook comes at an additional cost, so message the host to work out pricing beforehand.) Bonus: That aforementioned amphitheater has also hosted many a destination wedding; you can find inspo for your dream nuptials on the home's Instagram.

Montalcino villa with room for nine
If you're traveling with a slightly smaller group—a maximum of nine—then look into this renovated stone villa outside Montalcino, a 1.5-hour drive south of Florence. An Airbnb Plus, the decor is a mix of old and new, showcasing original features of the home like the ceilings and fire places while still bringing in modernity. The bedrooms offer a variety of sleeping options: there's one bunk room with three singles and three queen-size rooms. Visitors will also have access to outdoor living areas and a private pool overlooking the Tuscan hills.

Arezzo two-bedroom with original features
For travelers in need of a good dose of nature, a stay at this Arezzo farmhouse will get the job done. Situated in the middle of Chianti wine country, there's a large yard with a picnic table, infinity pool, and lounge chairs to spend time in. Inside, you'll find stone walls, terracotta floors, and exposed wood beam ceilings, alongside modern amenities like air conditioning and room darkening shades. It's the perfect size for a small family, with a king bed in one room and two singles in another, along with one bathroom to share. The house is also an Airbnb Plus, meaning it has passed that rigorous, 100-point inspection.

Montepulciano apartment with sweeping Tuscan views
If you're looking for a slightly more urban Airbnb that maintains a small-town feel, this two-bedroom apartment in Montepulciano will do the trick. Located right off a pedestrian street, this home has panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside from its bedrooms and front porch. We can only imagine what the sunsets look like. Amenities-wise, there are two bathrooms, a washer/dryer, and Wi-Fi. Note: There's no air-conditioning here, so plan your seasonal visit accordingly. (Temperatures in Tuscany can hit the mid-90s in July and August.)

Industrial treehouse on a working olive farm
This one-bedroom also made it on to our list of the coolest Airbnb treehouses—and for good reason. Located just 20 minutes outside of Florence in Galluzzo, its interior design is as quirky as its metal exterior, with a marble kitchen sink, wrap-around terrace, antique wood-burning stove, and walls covered in chalkboard paint. Surrounded by olive groves, this treehouse is an Airbnb Plus, meaning it's passed that 100-point inspection, plus guests get access to the main house's pool and tennis courts.

Book- and art-filled apartment in Trastevere
Many of Rome's best Airbnbs are decked out in antiques and art but this two-bedroom one-ups the rest with a jaw-dropping library that's filled to the brim with books. (It serves as the second bedroom with a pull-out bed, if you want to sleep surrounded by tomes.) It's located in Trastevere and there are views of the ochre, ivy-covered buildings that define the neighborhood—plus it's only on the second floor, so you won't have to haul your luggage (and yourself) up too many stairs.
Well-designed apartment in Rome's Jewish quarter
This light-filled modern apartment is a breath of fresh air among Rome's more historic options. Filled with pops of color, fun lighting, and a mix of modern and vintage furniture, it offers a calming respite after a day exploring the Eternal City. There's an elevator (a major rarity in Italian Airbnbs), kid-friendly amenities like a crib, and hotel-style amenities like a hair dryer and bathroom essentials.
Moody, amenity-filled two-bedroom
Oh, look, another teal apartment! This one is filled with moody decor touches, patterned wallpaper, and velvet furniture throughout its two bedrooms, large living room, and well-equipped kitchen. The apartment building was built in the 16th century but the Airbnb itself is fully renovated with modern amenities like air conditioning and HDTVs with access to streaming services like Netflix.

Solo travel–friendly one-bedroom
This cozy Airbnb looks out onto a leafy and quiet private courtyard, with a small balcony off its only bedroom. Quarters are small here—there's no living area outside of the chairs on the balcony and the pictured table in the bedroom—but you won't be spending too much time inside the apartment, thanks to the Airbnb's location smack in the middle of the Trastevere. And, when you're tired from a long day exploring, know that there's only one flight of stairs between you and your bed. Amenities include a washing machine, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.

Vatican-adjacent one-bedroom
A little outside of Rome's action-packed city center, this teal one-bedroom is just minutes (13, to be exact) from St. Peter's Basilica, which means being first in line at 7 a.m. to avoid the crowds will be a whole lot easier. It's also a block away from one of our favorite restaurants in the area, the unassuming, locals-only Il Sorpasso. As for the Airbnb Plus itself, you'll find a well-equipped kitchen, small living area (though you'll be spending most of your time out in the city), and bright blue bedroom. There's also a washing machine, a portable crib for toddlers, and air conditioning. Check out our full guide on what to do in Vatican City after you book.

Campo de Fiori apartment with ton of antiques
If you're a fan of antiques or art, book a few nights at this three-bedroom in Rome's Campo de Fiori neighborhood. It's filled with incredible furniture pieces, artwork, and books to peruse, which all adds to the rustic design of the three-story apartment. We're particularly fond of the cozy living rooms with original ceilings, greenery-filled dining room, and large private rooftop terrace. There are quite a few stairs here, since the apartment is spread across three floors, so pack and prepare accordingly.

Positano villa with a panoramic terrace
We'd book this Airbnb for the terrace alone. Sure, the views of the Mediterranean are nice, but the terrace itself has lounge chairs, a dining area, a water feature, a plant-covered trellis, and more, which all make relaxing the day away that much easier. Inside, though, there's beautiful tile work, two sumptuous bedrooms, and a light-filled kitchen that overlooks the aforementioned terrace. Plus, if you can pull yourself away from the vacation rental, you're within walking distance of Positano's best restaurants and shopping, and just 10 minutes from the beach.

Five-bedroom Airbnb Luxe
This stunning villa sits cliffside overlooking the colorful homes of Positano. There are multiple outdoor terraces, a waterfront deck, and five bright bedrooms, along with a cave gym, complete with an elliptical and rowing machine overlooking the Mediterranean below. It's all part of Airbnb Luxe, which includes a trip designer who can help you make additional bookings and organize things like private cooks, housekeeping, childcare, car rentals, and more. Note that it takes quite a few stairs to reach this villa; porters will help bring your luggage to the house but you'll have to wander up yourself.

Romantic Amalfi apartment
Cozy up in this chic, white Airbnb in Amalfi, which offers incredible views of the town below, colorful tiled nooks, a kitchenette, and a double bed. You'll want to spend as much time relaxing together in the apartment as exploring what's outside. That said, Amalfi's beach and ferries, which take you to the other coastal towns nearby, are less than a 10-minute walk away. (To note, that walk includes about 100 steps downhill that you will later have to hike back up, so fill your daypack accordingly.)

Cliffside Conca dei Marini villa
Yes, this is a picture of the quaint kitchen at this two-bedroom cliffside villa in Conca dei Marini—but trust us, the private terrace here that looks over the sea with 180-degree views of the coast is simply magical. (Many guests mention spending nights cooking in the kitchen or grilling out on the terrace.) The interiors are bright, fresh, and plant-filled, with tons of cozy nooks and crannies to laze the day away in.

Palermo apartment in the center of the action
If you want to experience Palermo's gritty-but-grand allure, there's no better place than this two-bedroom apartment steps from the famed La Vucciria market. An Airbnb Plus with the requisite washer/dryer, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and more, the home has a small balcony overlooking a private, quiet courtyard. The apartment building is in a refurbished 15th century palazzo, so expect a few quirks, and some stairs, inside.
Two-bedroom dammuso with a private pool
A type of architecture specific to Pantelleria, a Sicilian satellite island that's actually closer to Tunisia than Italy, dammusi are squat, domed houses made from local volcanic rock. This particular dammuso features two bedrooms, a private pool and covered terrace with views of the Mediterranean, a petite but equipped kitchen, spacious interior living areas, and easy driving access to nearby beaches and the famed Mirror of Venus lake. To get to the island, you can take a flight to the island's airport or an overnight ferry from Trapani, Sicily.

One-bedroom with Palermo views
Walkable to most of Palermo's iconic sites, and set on a small square just off of Vittorio Emanuele, equidistant from the Cathedral and the Quattro Canti, this one-bedroom Airbnb is a Traveler favorite. While it has all of the necessities, like a modern kitchen, spacious living room, and air conditioning, Traveler contributor Andrea Whittle was drawn to the terraces (yes, plural) that look over the city and offer the perfect spots for sunning, catching up on André Aciman or Elena Ferrante, and apertivo hour. 18th-century apartment in Modica
Built in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Modica's Old Town, this Sicilian apartment has original stone floors from the 18th century. Despite its history, the home is filled with modern amenities, including a washer/dryer, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. The host also offers a portable Wi-Fi device for trips to the coastal beaches, about 20 to 30 minutes away by car. Architecturally stunning, it has its own private, cobble-stoned backyard, large living spaces with impossibly high ceilings, and two bedrooms—one with a single bed, the other with a double. While farther away from major Sicilian cities (Palermo is a three-hour drive away, Catania about an hour and a half), you can fly into the Comiso airport about 20 minutes away.

Brera apartment with a film library
Those aren't books on the living room's bookshelves: It's an incredible DVD collection that may keep you glued to the couch in this Airbnb Plus. You won't have to sit still though, since this one-bedroom apartment is in Milan's Brera neighborhood, about a 10-minute walk from the Duomo and just five minutes from the Castello Sforzesco. This home is definitely on the homier side when it comes to decorations, with lots of wall accoutrements and knick-knacks, so if you're looking for a clean, hotel-like experience, book elsewhere.

Innovative studio overlooking a canal
If you're wondering what's going on in the picture above, allow us to explain. This studio makes the most efficient use of its small size, which means the bed lowers down from the ceiling when you want to go to sleep, and floats back up when you want to use the space below. And those two tables below? Sure, you could use them as a dining table—or you could use them as the homeowner intended, as a ping pong table. The Airbnb Plus packs a ton into a tiny space, including a washer/dryer, a relatively large bathroom for the apartment's size, and a stocked kitchen. There's a fittingly tiny balcony overlooking the Naviglio Pavese canal, too.
Colorful, Instagram-friendly apartment
One of our favorite colorful Airbnbs, this one-bedroom apartment in the Ponte Venezia neighborhood leans into the use of these green Moroccan tiles which cover a statement wall in the kitchen, deep green shower, and bathroom sink backsplash. Elsewhere, the design is minimal to let the green shine. As for exploring beyond the apartment, it's a 15-minute walk from Milan's iconic Duomo, and just a 20-minute walk from the Milan Centrale train station.

Retro two-bedroom within walking distance of Milan's best
There's something about the design of this two-bedroom apartment that screams dinner party. Maybe it's the deep green kitchen or the Cesca-esque dining chairs—or even the built-in bar wood-paneled bar in the living room. Whatever the case, it's a perfect spot to host a dinner in—even if it's just incredible Milanese takeout. Bedrooms are on the smaller side, but no complaints here, as you'll be out exploring or relaxing in the living room during most of your stay.

18th-century home with a massive private pool
Le Marche is not talked about as often as, say, Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast, but the eastern region has plenty to offer visitors, including a stay at this gorgeous countryside villa. Set on one and a half acres of land, the 18th-century home can sleep nine guests comfortably across four bedrooms, with room for a few more on air mattresses. It's well-equipped for longer stays, with a laundry machine and fully-stocked kitchen. The best space, though, just might be outside: The massive pool has a diving board on one end and lounge chairs lined up on one side, looking out at the rolling hills surrounding the farmhouse.

Countryside two-bedroom in Cingoli
Superhosts have all earned their distinction for a reason, but Monica and Giorgio go above and beyond: Past guests praise their detailed recommendations and hospitality, with some receiving homemade cakes and local wine during their stay. Located on a hill in the town of Cingoli, the property overlooks the Marche countryside, and has space for up to six guests across two bedrooms (both rooms have a queen bed and a single). Inside, there are plenty of unique decor touches, like the soft green kitchen cabinets, stone accents in the living room and bathrooms, and farmhouse-style sliding doors. Out back, there's a large garden, swimming pool, BBQ, and outdoor dining space.
- Courtesy of Airbnb
Two-bedroom with easy beach access
Polignano a Mare's picturesque beaches are less than a five-minute walk away from this three-floor home, with past guests noting its prime location close to the water, restaurants, and bars, as well as the host's hospitality (Cesare has also been known to bake welcome cakes for guests). The stairs mean it's not an ideal home for everyone: the ground floor houses the dining room, kitchen, and a bathroom; the first floor has one bedroom; the second floor has another bedroom and bathroom; and above that, there is a terrace with a dining table, second kitchen, lounge chairs, and a splash pool.

16th-century farmhouse with room for 13
Built into a fortified 16th century farmhouse, this stunning seven-bedroom home sleeps up to 13, all of whom will have space to spread out and explore among the 85 acres of vineyards, olive groves, and orchards featuring fig, pear, and pomegranate trees. The private pool with views over the grounds is an obvious draw, as are the light, airy interiors with ultra-high ceilings. While not a Superhost, the host can help coordinate a private chef, among other add-ons, during your stay. If you want to explore off-property, you're a 30- to 40-minute drive to the beach.
